The light source is at the top left corner of the composition.
Only the parts of the subject which are exposed to the light have a shadow. I wanted to capture strong sunlight as a cool source like the noon sun which would create warm shadows. Also I wanted to capture the effect where only a part of the subject has shadows , i.e. it is implied that the light is at an angle.
The background has been made abstract and have chosen dark colors to highlight the subject. The leaf is exposed to the light too and hence has been painted paler than it's counterparts (behind and around the sunflower).
Even simple subjects can be made interesting using light and shadows just like in this case and part-2.
