Lone Rose

This was supposed to be 'plein air' but it was too cold, so I took a reference picture (on the right) and came back inside to paint. As you can see, the edges are hard in this painting (on the left). Something we wouldn’t want while painting flowers. But they work well in this case as they define the shape of the subject well.

The dark background highlights the flower and it hasn’t been painted with too much detail, lest it shift the focus from the rose. I know from experience how careful one must be with backgrounds. They must be used to highlight the picture and stay behind, just as their name suggests. The subject could have been painted with full details, but I chose to paint it this way since it was very ‘watercolorish’ in my opinion , also I don’t like paintings with too many details - it’s like they spoil the fun.

What do you all think?
