This is one of my works when I was still a novice. Just like I mentioned in a previous post , backgrounds must be done with as much care as subject of a painting and must not be treated as an afterthought. As you can see I just tried to copy whatever was there in front of me and neglected to separate the background and the foreground.
The potted plant was the intended subject. The balcony grill and the building behind steal a lot of the focus. They should have been done in less detail. Though the overall composition looks good, I learnt to be very careful regarding backgrounds after this experience.
Have you had any bad experiences with background?

is having a subject necessary?
ReplyDeletean image can just be a plain representation what you just see, even something very ordinary.
because i personally like this painting.
More than a subject, what I wanted to convey here is that the painting looks flat as I did not take care of the background.
DeleteHighlighting a subject usually creates interest in the painting where the viewer is able to focus on what the artist wishes to convey to them over the background which exist to provide support.
Thank you for bringing up this point. :)
